Tecumseh Among the Cherokee

  • Moccasin Bend National Archeological District 10 Hamm Road Chattanooga, TN 37405 (map)

Shawnee leader Tecumseh became one of the most famous, feared, and respected American Indian leaders in the early 19th Century, being widely admired in his lifetime, even by Americans who fought against him. He sought intertribal unity to ally native nations to form a solid front against the expansion of white settlement into their lands. Earlier in his life, Tecumseh came to stay with the Chickamauga Cherokee and their famed leader, Dragging Canoe. That time, though short, was impactful on the young Shawnee. Years later, he sought to use some of the hard lessons learned from the Chickamaugas in his effort to save his people and their homeland.
