Scenic Roots Conversations
WUTC, Chattanooga’s university radio station, hosts a local community interest program called Scenic Roots. Since our Forever Moccasin Bend campaign launched in 2020, NPP became a frequent guest for conversations about the past, present, and future Moccasin Bend National Archeological District here in Chattanooga.
Forever Moccasin Bend is the fundraising effort led by National Park Partners to build that future, starting with Phase I to "Open the Gateway" and build a new Visitor Orientation Plaza at the national park entrance. Phase II launched in August, 2023 to “Save the Bend (Again) and protect the integrity of the cultural and historic resources of Moccasin Bend from the threat of proposed new construction on adjacent land.

Moccasin Bend was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 - to date, the only one here in Hamilton County.
In 2003, Federal legislation created the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District, adding the Bend to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
This fall, the Tennessee State Building Commission authorized the construction of a new mental health institute on the Bend, replacing the building on the Bend since the early 1960’s.

Dr. Frank Varney
General Grant Revisited At The Moccasin Bend Lecture Series
During the Civil War, Chattanooga was the Gateway to the Confederacy. In the fall of 1863 - months after the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania - Union and Confederate troops fought for control of this area in the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battles for Chattanooga. The Union prevailed here - but what was General Ulysses S. Grant’s role in the outcome?
Dr. Frank Varney is an author and a professor of U.S. and Classical History at St. Michael’s College in Vermont. He’s the next speaker for this fall’s Moccasin Bend Lecture Series here in Chattanooga, presented by National Park Partners - on Monday, October 2nd starting at 7 PM at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theater.
