Monument Restoration and Education on Chickamauga Battlefield – 11th Michigan

  • 11th Michigan Infantry Regiment Monument (map)

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a special 30-minute ranger-led program highlighting the restoration work currently being done at the Chickamauga Battlefield on the 11th Michigan Infantry’s regimental monument, located on Horseshoe Ridge/Snodgrass Hill. Staff from Northern Stone Carving, who is conducting the restoration work, will be on hand as well.

Colonel William Stoughton adorns the 11th Michigan monument as a testimony to his leadership, commanding not only his regiment but his brigade during the Battle of Chickamauga. Unfortunately, at some point, Colonel Stoughton’s hands and sword were lost as he silently watched over the battlefield. Join us for this special program to learn about Colonel Stoughton and the 11th Michigan’s role during the Battle of Chickamauga, the veterans’ efforts to be remembered through their monument, and the work presently being done to restore their monument for future generations.
